Identify Your Motivations and Relevant Skills

As you think about your sustainability career, it’s important to be grounded in what draws you to this field. You should periodically analyze your own values and whether your path is aligned with them–not only as you plan for and embark on your career journey, but also throughout your career.

You are probably motivated by a desire to have some type of impact through your sustainability career, and this can happen in many ways. What, specifically, are you hoping to contribute, and what would you like to learn? Be honest with yourself about the unique knowledge, skills, and perspectives you can contribute to sustainability efforts. Avoid being swayed by lofty ideals alone–focus on your pragmatic interests and qualifications. Sustainability is a broad field, and it needs an equally broad coalition to tackle its challenges. Do you have technical expertise, strong communication abilities, policy know-how, innovative spirit, or passion for community outreach? Identifying your priorities, skills, and interests allows you to target roles aligned with your goals, which will inevitably make you more competitive as a candidate for those roles. There are a lot of resources you can turn to for inspiration and reflection on what skills you have and need to develop in order to be successful in the field, including some linked in the activity below.

Now let’s get to work on a few reflection questions designed to help prompt your thinking. It’s fine to leave a few of these questions blank and come back to them over time, but keep them in mind as you progress through this workbook. We also recommend that you physically write or type your answers, perhaps in a location that you can come back to again at a later date to see how much your motivations and goals have or haven’t changed over time.

Every career has the potential to be a sustainability career by incorporating sustainable practices and prioritizing environmental responsibility. Sustainability is not limited to specific industries or job titles; it is a mindset and approach that can be applied across various fields.

Academia plays a crucial role in advancing sustainability through research, education, and knowledge dissemination. Professors, researchers, and students in fields like environmental science, engineering, and public policy contribute to developing sustainable solutions and shaping future generations of sustainability leaders. Graduate school (in the form of a master’s degree or PhD) is one potential path to a sustainability career, but it is not the only one, and it is not a required prerequisite for many career paths. If you are considering going to graduate school, consider talking to peers, working professionals, career advisors, and/or professors to determine if this is the right option for you.

In the corporate world, companies are increasingly recognizing the importance of sustainable business practices. Sustainability professionals can work in a variety of roles, such as corporate social responsibility managers, environmental compliance officers, or green product designers. Some companies are seeking to weave sustainability practices into all roles. The size of sustainability teams, and whether they are stand alone organizations or integrated within the company, can also influence whether your work will be targeted in one particular field or require you to wear multiple hats.

Nonprofit organizations are at the forefront of advocating for environmental causes and promoting sustainable practices. Careers in this sector include roles such as environmental advocates, community organizers, and sustainability program coordinators. They work to raise awareness, influence policy decisions, and implement grassroots initiatives for a more sustainable future.

Consulting firms offer sustainability advisory services to businesses, governments, and organizations. Sustainability consultants analyze operations, identify areas for improvement, and provide recommendations for implementing sustainable strategies, sometimes in target areas such as water use or carbon emissions. They help clients navigate the complexities of sustainability and achieve their environmental goals.

Government agencies play a vital role in developing and enforcing environmental regulations, policies, and programs. Careers in this field include environmental policy analysts, urban planners, and sustainability officers. They work to ensure compliance with environmental laws, promote sustainable development, and address issues such as climate change, waste management, and resource conservation.
